Writer's picture: John RosierJohn Rosier

Returns of selected markets over the last week and since 1st January. This week is sorted by the week. Sorted by the last year can be found at the end of this post.

Good news on the inflation in Continental Europe and the US. Consequently, government bond yields fell on both sides of the Atlantic. Hopefully, the UK’s November inflation numbers will show similar progress. Equities, as did some industrial metals like nickel and copper, made modest gains. Make or break time for gold - pushing up against previous highs.

JIC Portfolio

The JIC Portfolio was down 0.8 per cent last week and is now down 12.1 per cent in 2023 v +4.3 per cent for the FTSE All-Share (TR) Index.

For the five years to 1 December, JIC is up 43.3 per cent. Over the same period, the FTSE All-Share TR Index was up 28.1 per cent.

The AIM All-Share is down 12.2 per cent this year, the FTSE 250 is up 0.8 per cent, and the FTSE Small Cap (Ex Investment Co) is down 0.6 per cent.

JIC Funds' Portfolio

The Funds’ Portfolio is down 4.2 per cent this year v +11.9 per cent for the FTSE All-World (GBP, TR) Index.

It is up 22.6 per cent since inception in July 2020. Over the same period, the FTSE All-World GBP TR Index is up 39.7 per cent.

Big Movers over the last week

Positives: Nothing up more than 5.0 per cent.

Negatives: PayPoint was down 9.9% (2% of which was it going ex-dividend 9.5p), and IG Design -9.9%.

RS Group, Renew Holdings, and Bloomsbury.

Last week’s trades, news, and ex-dividends

No trades last week.

Good results from Renew Holdings. IG Design’s results led to some tempering of next year’s forecast, but it remains confident of restoring margins to pre-COVID levels. Me Group trading update saw sales fall short of forecast but margins and profits ahead of forecasts. The market chose to focus on the former. Harbour Energy’s update showed it continues to generate prolific levels of cash.

On Thursday, PayPoint went ex-dividend 9.5p and Temple Bar Investment Trust 2.5p.

Sylvania Platinum paid its dividend of 5.0p and Bloomsbury 3.7p on Friday.

Upcoming Events and ex-dividends

There are no scheduled announcements for my holdings.

On Wednesday, Fidelity Asian Values will pay its dividend.

Cash Holdings

0.7 per cent in the JIC Portfolio and 1.2 per cent in the Funds' Portfolio.

34.1 per cent of the JIC Portfolio comprises six commodity holdings – up from 33.6 per cent last weekend.

Enjoy the weekend.
