Weekend Roundup - Closed the gap a little further

Returns of selected markets over the last week and since 1st January. This week is sorted by the week. Sorted by the last year can be found at the end of this post.

Highlights: US pauses on further interest rate increases following better-than-expected May inflation. The EU increased rates by 0.25 per cent. The Bank of England decision comes next week after inflation numbers on Wednesday.


Sterling climbs to 1.28 v US$ and 1.17 v €


Apple now has a market capitalisation worth more than the whole of the FTSE 100 combined. That’s Astra Zeneca, Shell, HSBC, Unilever, Rio Tinto and 95 others.


JIC Portfolio

The JIC Portfolio is down 5.9 per cent in 2023 v +4.3 per cent for the FTSE All-Share (TR) Index.

For the five years to 16th June 2023, it is up 54.2 per cent. Over the same period, the FTSE All-Share TR Index was up 18.4 per cent.

AIM All-Share is down 4.7 per cent this year, the FTSE 250 is up 0.9 per cent, and FTSE Small Cap is up 1.4 per cent.


JIC Funds' Portfolio

The Funds’ Portfolio is down 2.0 per cent this year v +7.3 per cent for the FTSE All-World (GBP, TR) Index.

It is up 25.7 per cent since inception in July 2020. Over the same period, the FTSE All-World GBP TR Index is up 34.0 per cent.


Big Movers over the last week


Positives: SDI Group +16.0 per cent, Glencore +7.4 per cent and Me Group +7.0 per cent.

Negatives: Nothing to report

Fidelity Asian Values, Me Group, Polar Capital Holdings and Serica Energy.

Ex-dividends and Upcoming Events

On Thursday, RS Group went ex-dividend 13.7p, BlackRock Energy & Resources Income, 1.1p and Ecora Resources, 1.69p.

NextEnergy Solar Fund publishes results on Monday, and IG Design publishes them on Tuesday.

No ex-dividends next Thursday.


Cash Holdings

0.2 per cent in the JIC Portfolio and 0.2 per cent in the Funds' Portfolio.

32.7 per cent of the JIC Portfolio comprises six commodity holdings – no change from last week.
